Buying a used jet ski can be a great way to hit the water without breaking the bank — but it’s essential to know what to look for so you don’t end up with costly surprises. At Challenge Marine, we help our customers make smart decisions by focusing on the things that matter.
Start by checking the hull for cracks, deep scratches, or signs of previous repairs. A damaged hull can affect performance and safety, particularly if the ski has been used in rough or offshore conditions. Next, look at the engine hours — while jet skis are built to last, excessive hours may indicate heavy use. Around 30–50 hours a year is typical for recreational use.
Corrosion is another key concern, especially for jet skis used in saltwater. Look for rust or corrosion on the engine, under the seat, and around fittings. Ask for service records if available — these provide valuable insight into how well the ski has been maintained. A water test is ideal to confirm engine performance, throttle response, and how it handles on the water.
Don’t forget to inspect the trailer if one is included. Tyres, lights, rust spots and winch condition all matter.
At Challenge Marine, we regularly inspect and prepare used jet skis before sale, so you can shop with confidence. We’re always happy to walk you through a pre-purchase checklist or arrange an inspection if needed.
